This is how you write content…sheer brilliance
Many of you are wondering what quality content is all about - well this folks is it.
Right here - if you can write a tenth as well as this, you will make a fortune- and the cool part of it is there is no trick to it…
Props to Jo on facebook for giving me the heads-up on this masterpiece
Who needs copywriting techniques when you can tell a story.
Just brilliant.
Ed
PS Check the how much the cards are and how many peolpe have seen this…
Description (revised)I’m selling a bunch of Pokemon cards. Why? Because my kids sneaked them into my shopping cart while at the grocery store and I ended up buying them because I didn’t notice they were there until we got home. How could I have possibly not noticed they were in my cart, you ask? Let me explain.
You haven’t lived until you’ve gone grocery shopping with six kids in tow. I would rather swim, covered in bait, through the English Channel, be a contestant on Fear Factor when they’re having pig brains for lunch, or do fourth grade math than to take my six kids to the grocery store. Because I absolutely detest grocery shopping, I tend to put it off as long as possible. There comes a time, however, when you’re peering into your fridge and thinking, ‘Hmmm, what can I make with ketchup, Italian dressing, and half an onion,’ that you decide you cannot avoid going to the grocery store any longer. Before beginning this most treacherous mission, I gather all the kids together and give them “The Lecture“.

LOL! That sounds like my family! I have 4 kids and then when my step-kids are here, there are 7. I can sooooooooo relate to this gal, it’s not even funny.

Absolutely brilliant!!

I’m sure this is real life - and sometimes really life really is a lot of fun to read and to share!
Thanks Jo! Thanks Ed!

God bless the highest bidder as well as the mum!

I notice the highest bidder at the moment is tedlegend…I wonder who that could be…

Totally rocks this one does. I can see the look on that boys face as he pulled that apple out.
Thanks for this one Ed and Jo.

Content is the KING!!!
August 22nd, 2007 at 2:34 am
I lived the first 52 years of my life in Manitoba, Canada. My oh my! This really brings back the memories of being the oldest of 7 “young whippersnappers” (uhh, pig-latin for brats, I think).
Content? In 2004 I wrote a number of articles of instruction with pictures and videos for my beginning website. I then knifed out the text and edited that text to place on GoArticles. That is the only promotion I did as I had no money to do any paid promotions. In a short time Google put some green stuff on my page rank bar (3/10 shows up). The language I used is what anyone who reads can understand. I think this lady was my former English teacher.
Thanks Ed for finding this and sharing it with us.

He He. That was a riveting story. Had me all the way to the end. Its at 100+ bucks now - for a pack of cards. Who would have thought that possible.
August 22nd, 2007 at 3:32 am
That had me in stitches, one of the funniest things I have read in a long time! Shame she’s only up to $100 on the auction though.
August 22nd, 2007 at 4:52 am
I would have sold the kids not the cards!;-)
Actually, reminds me of my mum taking the 5 of us shopping - took twice as long and cost a lot more than normal (which for a family on a very tight budget must have been extremely frustrating).
Great style and really reinforces what you have been saying (and what Mike Mindel wrote about).

What a scream - now that is what you call adding value for the reader!
August 22nd, 2007 at 5:06 am
I’ve just read the auction and scooters man - did you see how many visits this auction received?
Over 78,000 and counting.
A Mum or a clever marketer?? I wonder!!
The extremely valuable lesson to take from this auction copy is - its non-salesy and it works the emotional strings. You feel sorry for her and by the end of the copy you feel that you really know her and can relate to exactly how she feels.
Well done to the ebay seller “dawnm5723″ - if you Google her, you’ll see she’s done this before with great results, an old Pro I’d say
Credit where credit is due regardless of whether she’s a good ‘ole Mom’ or seasoned marketer!!

Those cards probably aren’t worth more than 2 bucks all together!!! So what did she do? Did she use the thirtydaychallenge techinques and then put a link to her auction? That right there is some amazing stuff… It’ll be amazing what the internet will turn into once more and more people figure out HOW IT REALLY WORKS!!! The internet will be an amazing database of quality rich content with the absolute best products available. I am anxious to get started…
August 22nd, 2007 at 5:17 am
I take the 2 bucks comment back… They probably aren’t “worth” (what’s worth anyways?) more than 10-15 bucks using the regular way of marketing; just taking pictures, writing short descriptions, and posting it with fairly good keywords.
People that think linear will not make it online any longer. There is a new dog in town… Driving traffic to eBay auctions through the 30 day challenge techniques is mind blowing!

And the bid is now at $106, what GREAT copy!!! Way to go dawnm. I’d buy and I am not even into pokeman.

This ad is very Joseph Sugarman-esque. If you look at the old JS&A ads they read like an entertaining story, which I guess is the point. Great job.

All I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 22nd, 2007 at 8:17 am
Way To Go.
August 22nd, 2007 at 8:25 am
Funny sells.
I can write like that, but…guess I’ll have to go rent some kids.
August 22nd, 2007 at 9:06 am
Unbelievable. The bidding, not the kids. Anyhow, give that mother a medal - she is so brave!
Great stuff and lot of fun also. Thanks for sharing.

I think Lisa H. was onto something. Did anyone check key phrases involving actually selling kids? I have a couple I’d give up cheap…
August 22nd, 2007 at 10:25 am
It was actually an enjoyable two paragraphs; I actually wanted to know what happened next. But thats your point ain’t it, Ed??
August 22nd, 2007 at 11:02 am
Effective copy.
I hope the child suffers no repercussions.
August 22nd, 2007 at 1:41 pm
Fantastic. Just what I needed. Captivating copy…, what a hoot!!
August 22nd, 2007 at 2:12 pm
Great copy. My goal is to be able to write like that. I’m a left-brained kind of person - numbers, figures, logic. I have to figure out how to get my creative right brain in gear. I don’t have any kids but I call my dog and 2 cats my “kids” so I will have to improvise.

Here’s another one of her past auctions that didn’t get as much publicity (because it was only up for a day) but it’s pretty funny, too.

She finally sold the Pokemon cards for $142.51 Way to Go!!! It is a great story & I think she will be continuing to perfect her craft — just like we should. Thanks so much for showing us this ebay post - it was priceless!

Have copied and sent to my friend Samantha who has 6 kids. I’m going to ask Sam to write all my press releases in future. If you can survive 6 kids you can survive anything!
August 23rd, 2007 at 10:41 pm
I just read that brilliant auction description and I must say I am nearly speechless. Absolutely awesome way to build value in a useless pack of Pokemon cards. Absolutely awesome way to drive traffic to your target site. I sincerely hope she is getting a little added $ on the blog side. I’ve bookmarked her blog and am definitely showing it to my wife in the morning. Great, great stuff. I hope Ed sent her a personal invitation to the 30DC if she isn’t already a member.

The Power Of GREAT Copywriting […on eBay]
Ok, so by now you’ve probably heard about the father, who after finding his 15 year old son smoking pot in the family backyard, sold his Christmas present for $72 times it recommended retail value on eBay…
But if not, here’s the 411 …
