What the?
RSS - which stand for Really Simple Sydication - I think
changed my life - Much like the DJ, but that’s a story for another time…
How can I possibly sound so smart given that I am a simple country boy from Beechworth in Victoria.
This video shows you how I do it. Your mission for today is to set up Bloglines - the “feedreeder” I use.
We are going to use this feature in ways you would not believe - so get it set-up, subscribe to the blogs that I show you in the video and you are off to the races.
Here it is in super sexy downloadable super sharp quicktime (In the next lesson I’ll show you how to get this straight into your iPhone/iPod/computer)
Ed
PS - A number of you were wondering why I don’t put up the links that I mention in the post straight away. The reason is simple.
I want you to watch the video - carefully. Yes, even all my guru collegues following along the challenge.
See - if i published the links - you would think - right i’ll just go get them and skip watching the video - This would be bad…
In the videos, I talk about why I use things and how I use them - and that’s where you are going to get all the value! Everyone’s known about these add-on’s and sites for ages - how they are used and why Dan, Nic and I use them - That’s the real trick.
The download link is wrong again you can get it here:

awesome video, thanks……but i had a question…how do you set up firefox so that the orange button that you can automatically add blogs with will add the rss to bloglines, when i press the orange button now it says: add ‘thirty day challenge’ as live bookmark, or it says: add ‘thirty day challenge’ as live bookmark in del.icio.us……..what should i do?……….thanks in advance
“In the videos, I talk about why I use things and how I use them - and that’s where you are going to get all the value!”
Your right. I knew about most of these but seeing how you use session manager & bloglines is *really* going to be a great time saver. Sweet…
Tom
Hey there,
I saw the “clippings” tab on Bloglines, and it made me think of Onfolio and NetSnippets. I just got aroud to using those programs to create special reports to offer as products for sale and sign up, when they disappeared.
Can we use bloglines to gather stuff from all over the web on a topic to put into a document, to then offer to our lists?
If not, does anyone know what we can use that is easy to use?
Thanks!
And Ed, this is going to be GREAT! I’ve recruited a few people to join and can think of a few more I’m planning to invite.
Blessings!
Sarah
I have a question about Bloglines… I have my iGoogle set up with lots of bookmarks and RSS feeds. Are you suggesting that I need to transfer all of that to Bloglines? Why would Bloglines be better than iGoogle?
Happy day,
Anne
Ed could you clarify why we would need to subscribe to more than one feed from the same site? For example, in the video you checked all three from tubbynerd.
And what do mean in the video at minute 9:05, that we can subscribe to your public feed?
Thank you
Ed,
You will have to work HARD to top Bloglines, for me, anyway. How could I have been on the ‘net since there’s been a ‘net and not known about this FAN-FREAKIN’-TASTIC site? Sheesh!
Ok, realistically, with all the tricks you’ve got up your collective sleeves, I will probably be wowed on a daily basis for the entire length of the challenge, but I’m tellin’ you, Ed - you made my day today with Bloglines. Session Manager is a close second, today, too.
I am SO GLAD I joined.
Thanks!
Suzanne
Anthony,
To setup Bloglines as the default RSS reader for Firefox:
- In Firefox, go to menu items Tools->Options->Feeds
- Click on “Subscribe to the feed using…”
- Choose Bloglines
- Click OK
That’s it!
KokPang
To clarify a couple of things that Ed left out:
1) The setting to get the orange button to open BlogLines is in your settings.
Here is a screencast showing you where it is:
http://www.screencast.com/t/7IDP9LIhx
In words, here is how you do it:
Click on the menu item “Tools” in Firefox, then in the Tools menu, find “Options” at the bottom of the menu. You will be presented with a dialog box. There is an orange button with the word “Feeds”, click that. Select “Subscribe to the feed using:” radio button, then choose “Bloglines” from the list below that.
2) About transfering your Google feeds to Bloglines, might be a good idea, as you can share your Bloglines feeds, you can’t do this with iGoogle.
3) Subscribing to multiple feeds: yes if you will look at the feeds on different devices, like on your iPhone or on your computer.
Hope this helps,
Pat

Kokpang and Pat,
thank you so much for your very helpful advice
Great tip about using the hot keys! I’ve been using bloglines for a while not but always scrolled through with the slider. Hot keys are much easier to use!
Thanks.
Bloglines
I’m sure Bloglines is a great RSS feed reader, but I think I’m going to stick with Google Reader for now. Unless some amazing feature of Bloglines is revealed later.
I keep track of over 200 blogs and news sources via RSS with Google Reader…
I can’t believe I haven’t seen this before. I’ve always used Outlook!! Without a doubt Ed, this has to be the best thing since they put VB in stubbies.
Cheers,
I have been using bloglines probably forever and can attest the the amount of time it saves. Googe reader is also available which is just as good (maybe better).
You can share feeds in Google Reader if you export them in OPML format. You can also share various articles that you read.
This is such great information! I thought I was going to learn about internet marketing but now I’m also learning
how to effectively utilize the internet. Thanks so much!

Thanks Ed,
The tools are great, now I can’t wait to learn how to maximize their use for this challenge!
Robert
Thanks Ed,
Awesome, can’t wait to get started
Kokpang and Pat,
thank you so much for your very helpful advice.
Ed, kudos as usual. And, of course, I’d be one of the stinkers who move at the speed of light doing things (lately) and would only check the links and not watch the videos…however, I must say, you are interesting to listen to voice-wise and you are a good teacher, explaining things (so far!!
) well. Not one of those who “tease” but are afraid they will somehow lose power or something if they “share”…that that. The one who gives grows even more powerful. The holders-in stay stagnant. At least, my experience in life.
I am out of time to watch the videos…tomorrow it starts…dang…will continue!
What a great help this was Ed!
Until now, I thought that all RSS feeds were displayed via srolling feed-readers and have not had a clue how to set one up (especially on my site). This was extremely educational for me!
Thank you again greatly,
Richard
Brilliant and Thankyou!
For everything so far!
Session Manager just proved it’s weight….
And Just getting to know my way around Bloglines
And Please Ed tell me How do I pickup on yr public Blogline?
Best to you all,
George
Thanks Ed for awesome info. Also, thanks to Pat for explicit directions for setting up the RSS feed in the browser with Tools. Helped tremendously!
i dont see how having any of these add-ons will make me any money yet… i dunno, maybe i missed something.. just have to wait and see i guess.
What gets me folks, is that once I’ve subscribed to a feed and it is setup in Bloglines - showing you how many new items in the feed, where does it go once you have viewed the feeds?
I can view just one new item in a feed which may have 10 or even 30 new items, then if I happen to, or need to close the browser all new items are gone when I go back to Bloglines…
So this appears to be a normal function of the site, I’m not saying it’s broken, I’m just wondering why they (obviously) expect you to stay right there, don’t close the browser and read ALL new item in one session.
I just don’t have enough time to read ALL the new items that come in each day that I am subscribed to, I do sleep occasionally :s
Is anybody else experiencing this? And has anyone found a solution to this?
Cheers.
P.
Ed Dale taught me about Bloglines and I will never sleep again!!! Damn you Ed!!

thank you so much for your very helpful advice.!
I registered with Bloglines almost a week ago and never received the confirmation email.
I tried the send another verification email link many times with no success.
I also sent 3 support messages through their site, and did receive 3 autoresponder emails but have never
received a confirmation email.
Has anyone else had this much trouble with Bloglines?
Bill
Awesome Tools!!!
Bill,
I am having the same problem. Does anyone know how to fix the problem? I also signed up for bloglines. I have not received the confirmation email. I tried several times. I have sent emails to their site requesting help. I still do not have access to the site. Help!!
What a great service - Your video above has been very useful to get it up & running really easily. Thanks for the brilliant info!
Thanks for the info!!! I’m using Google Reader, nice program!!!
Bloglines is great, especially as I work on several computers, I tend to forget which blog I subscribed to on which computer. This makes life so easy. So, thanks for the eye openers, Ed!
I personally use and love Thunderbird as my main RSS reader. Because its not a website but an application loaded on my USB thumb drive, I have the benefit of both worlds by not having to go through a web page to access my RSS feeds (and therefore much much faster) but also being portable and so can be used on any computer.
So I’ll probably stick to that.
I also am shocked that I never have heard of bloglines, and am SO happy that Ed pointed it out. What a great and awesome time saver!
I am doing the thirty day challenge albeit a little slowly, trying to squeeze in too much I suppose. I have watched this video twice now and it has been worth it to reinforce how to use bloglines. The other improtant measure is to also review the forum entries following the video to see what other valuable hints that people have picked up. This is what community is all about!
Ed,
I do not see any objective at the end of each email . I also do not understand why there are so many comments by many people at the end. Your lesson is not like the traditional classroom lesson and I do not see where I hading. I wasn’t born in the internet era and maybe I have to take time to understand. I am following your lesson carefully but there are so many links whereby I have to surf and I get lost of the objective of the lesson. Could you update me with a few sentences each time you send me an email? Much obliged if you can. TQ.
Regards,
Elaine Leow
Hi Ed, or someone who might know, joined up today,
cant find seo for firefox 2.5.1 + google tags on the ad ons, plus meebo application isn’t liked and wont load, any ideas?
thanks
those who are worried about google reader and whatever’s already set up there (or in firefox), you do know you can save those blogs as opml files (or xml) and import it to blogline?
I found google reader completely unintuitive - dunno why but bloglines is much easier/better (for me anyway). thanks for this wonderful site. it’s completely overwhelming but completely wonderful.
I,am really enjoying this, I,ve been following you for a long time but this puts it all in a nut shell. I have all the stomperNet lessons and this is the best I can,t wait to complete this corse. Thank you very much for given me the chance to learn from you. When I start making some money, I would love to send you a painting out of my gallery. Ron
I do believe my brain may explode due to this information
overload!
Seriously, I assume it will all become easier with daily use.
Once again, this is very cool. It’s like an email inbox on crack. I just registered my account and will be setting up my feeds. This is a very useful application. Thanks again and keep the good content coming.
Hi Ed,
I just viewed the Bloglines video
and boy this Blogline will save me

Have an Inspiring Day
