This is why I love the Internet (and it’s the secret to Marketing on the Internet in 2007)

Iasked someone to youtube Gary Coleman for me - This was up on the forum with-in hours. And because I mentioned Dana (BTW home schoolers! don’t go and google Dana on google images like I just did. It’s better to remember her like this…)RIP Dana

Look, I know we should be talking advanced internet marketing tactics and strategies here, but all my team want to know is ‘What the hell does that tag-line mean?’

Never heard of ‘Different Strokes‘ guys? Poor little black guy living with rich older white guy (No, it’s not what you think!) Gary Coleman was actually 34 when he played this part I’ve heard

Anyhoo, here’s some YouTube videos featuring the little guy so you can get in on the joke and play catchup.

Sorry Ed, don’t think Dana’s in it much

Now, here is the interesting thing - how many traffic generating sites did I use in this blog post. There is a marketing lesson in everything… You just have to take notice.

I believe THree its the magic number (sorry old school house rocks rhyme). i BELIEVE YOU MENTIONED THREE TRAFFIC GENERATING SITES…
    1. Forums
    2. Google Images
    3. You Tube

Correct me if I am wrong it is like a hidden puzzle in the kids magazines at the Doctors office and I might have missed one of the clues.

  3. Ed Says:

There is at least one more…

  4. Zach K. Says:

Well the sites that I saw were used in this post were:
    1. Wikipedia
    2. Flickr
    3. Youtube

  5. Zach K. Says:

P.S. I said flickr because thats where the image comes from, although you might have found it through google images, as you mentioned.

  6. Tracey Patterson Says:

When you said look at the links, you got me paying attention to the icons at the bottom of each post. I’ve been looking at where those links go–cool stuff. Some of it you have introduced already like del.icio.us and digg, others are new. Are you going to cover these too? Either way, I am looking forward to more.

  7. Dennis Santiago, Jr Says:

Gary Coleman was 12 yrs old when he started on the show. He looks real old in this picture so it must be from much later.

  8. Martin Mölsted Says:

    4:
    Wikipedia
    YouTube
    Forums
Those subscribe links at the bottom (it’s a nice WP plugin)

  9. Don Wilson Says:

By telling us what not to do, I bet 95% of everyone reading this post (like me) immediately Googled “Dana from Different Strokes”.

  10. Martin Mölsted Says:

  11. Michael Says:

Maybe I’m thick, but I have no clue how many. I agree with Gord Young

I clicked on the link and the video has been removed from YouTube.

Can you explain the lesson here…

    Thanks

  12. Richard Jares Says:

    I don’t get it.
What does Coleman the girl or his being a PIMP have to do with anything, much less with what willis said.

    For clean water everywhere,
    Richard

  13. robin skrzypek Says:

Right click properties on the links and images and you’ll see the sources for the elements of the page.

    Robin

  14. Rick Hobbs Says:

I thought the most risque thing was going to be the picture or Dan Raines?
That second video listed up top is flat out offensive, I thought we were aiming for family friendly.

That video should be removed as a reference item or at least marked as highly offensive.

As the song goes “what might be right for you, may not be right for some” this second is not right for most people.

Let’s keep it clean and Family Friendly…… I am one of those home school parents.

    Rick

  15. Abi Says:

    Wikipedia
    Feedburner

  16. Keithanthony Taylor Says:

I only saw two videos the third removed for terms of use violations but forgive me, I don’t have TV, don’t know the show, and all I saw was a lot of bad language! In short I don’t got a clue what its all about, and I’m no closer to understanding the front from the back of the Internet, what the 30 day challenge is, I don’t know how to set up a web site or currently have the finance from my disability pension, so maybe I don’t belong any place near here!

    Keithanthony

However here is a joke which I particularly like since for me it shows the absurdity of racism since we all share the same blood, cardiovascular, muscular and pretty much everything else except that we have to thank heaven that the black nations gave us the blues, Jazz, Gospel and pretty much every other kinda music except Elvis, and Rolf Harris!

A Zebra dies and goes to heaven! Perplexed about lifes many mysteries he asks St Peter, “St Peter, am I Black with white stripes or am I White with black stripes?” Eventually after taking St Peters advice he returned from God, all the more perplexed saying to St Peter, “St Peter I don’t understand God said only; my son you are what you are?” St Peter looked at the little zebra and said, “It is clear then, you are White with black stripes since had you been Black with white stripes he’d have said unto you; you is what you is!”

  17. Bill Scott Says:

There is a lot of garbage on network TV in the USA so our night is spent watching Discovery, Travel etc.
Never watched ‘Different Strokes‘ and never want to. I try to be color blind and will remain that way.

  18. Mike Says:

I used to watch Different Strokes as a kid. It is very different watching it now.

  19. Elisa Allender Says:

That language in the song in the 2nd video is TERRIBLE! You need to remove that from here or at least put a PARENTAL ADVISORY warning to get your kids out of the room while listening to it!!

  20. carolina mendez Says:

    TOTALLY GOT IT ;)

  21. james Says:

and this helps us make money how?

  22. Destiny Says:

I don’t get it Ed. The first message was different strokes which i remember use to watch that show awhile back ago, the second video well it is filthy garbage don’t like that type of trash don’t know what it’s representing is it little guy being a pimp in a rich man’s house, u can’t get a dollar out of the rich man. And the third couldn’t get YouTube stated violation too many times for inappropriate use, actually the second one should of been banned, maybe that is what they mean but misrepresent. I also seen google adwords on there as it being a paid site someone put up on the webpage of YOUTube and I notice the RSS feeds where u can track down.

  23. Gaelene Adams Wood Says:

There are four if you include the blog site:

    1. Wikipedia
    2. Flickr
    3. Youtube
    4. The blog

    Is this right Ed?

  24. Tom de Grom Says:

I am having a lot of trouble trying to download firefox. I clicked on download and then run…go through the whole download process and get an icon on my desktop. But when I go to tools - add on, the only option I get is Talk Back. Cant find a contact us either here or at firefox.

  25. Isiaha Barlow Says:

    1. Google Search
    2. Google Images
    3. 30 Day Challenge Forum (Forums?)
    4. Youtube

    ???

  26. Carolyn Winslow Says:

I am sure it is the “tag line” Different strokes has got to be thirty years old, but the tag line “Whatcha talkin bout, Willis” is still remembered and still spoken. Many young people don’t know where it came from but it is certainly burned into memory.

It is true, there is a marketing message in everything and I do mean everything if you look close enough for the pearl or maybe even a diamond.
