Thirty Day Challenge Launch - The Download edition
We were hoping to get this to you WAAAY earlier than this - but we had a heck of a time getting this video encoded.
Actually when I say “we” - I mean Intern of the week - Paul Young.
First - here is the video - remeber it’s designed to download - so you will need to right click on the link and save it to your computer.
Thirty Day Challenge Launch Video
Everytime I watch that opening sequence I get shivers…
Now for those of you who are interested here is Pauls descriptioon of what he had to do to bring this to you all…
If you’re interested in the workflow I finally came up with, here it is.
As you know we can’t convert files greater than 45 minutes to MP4’s on Ustream. I noticed even when you can convert the shorter files, the audio ends up out of sync.
I downloaded the FLV from Ustream and played it in RichFLV while capturing with Screenflow. Nothing else I have will play the FLV file with audio as it uses a proprietary compression format called Nellymoser.
Since the resulting Screenflow video was also out of sync, I then ran this through Garage band and deleted the video track then saved the audio as MP3.
I then mixed the silent MP4 video file (from converting the original FLV in Visualhub) with the MP3 audio file using iMovie.
It would be a lot easier if Ustream allowed conversions for clips greater than 45 minutes AND got the sync right: )
Well Done Paul!!!
Enjoy
Ed

Great Stuff
I did a quick video with my take on the show - http://pcnn.com/?p=32
Sign up now and start getting those referrals! Free edge membership is worth the effort, trust me!

Wow, can’t believe that it has been a year since the last 30DC. Eagerly looking forward to doing it again this year. Quite frankly, I hope to get further along with it this year; but the things I learned last year are still benefiting me now. Ed, you got us on Twitter way before the current rage.
It all reminds me of the title of one of my favorite books by one of my favorite authors: Oh The Places You Will Go! by Dr. Seuss. And I know that there are many more places for me to go.

I’m at 26% downloaded and really looking forward to the launch. I have a new, very compelling webservice coming online and am looking for the 30 day challenge to teach me how to best market my site and build buzz/traffic. Cheers!

Hey Ed i think paul needs a pay rise.

Is it just me, or does the audio go dead around the 35min mark ?
May 21st, 2008 at 7:12 am
Wow! Thanks to you all, great work! What a hell of a lot of effort to bring it to us. Can’t ustream do something about it to make it easier, or is it their way to keep people from using too much of their resources? What about doing the show in two or three parts, or isn’t it possible?
Thanks again, cant wait to watch it.
May 21st, 2008 at 7:27 am
Yes. The picture and audio freeze at 35min mark.
Could Paul take a look at it please? Sorry to put you back to work at it again.
Thanks in advance.

Yup. Just after 35 min the video goes like the old Bobbit game on the Commodore 64 (who remembers that?) when you do nothing, the only thing that happens is “time passes”.
Thanks for looking into it

same thing here right when Ed is about to go into what you can win for the most referrals or something lol

There’s a much easier work flow - it was necessary in order to make the show notes (stopping and starting is a no go with ustream). Just play the video on Ustream, whilst capturing with screenflow. Then zoom in to just the video and time code, and export at 320×240. Still takes a couple of hours, but is pretty straight forward.
Show notes are currently in progress, by the way, and I’m loving the launch show so far…

I don’t have access to the server otherwise I’d reload the video. Something must have gone wrong when Ed uploaded it because mine seems ok.
@Tim Brennan your work flow makes a lot of sense but the audio doesn’t sync and watching it is very annoying. Also recording directly from the stream instead of downloading means your at the mercy of your bandwidth.

Bet you’re glad you signed up as an intern now Paul
That’s a lot of work for each video. Time to beg Ustream to change their rules methinks.
Thanks for the hard work,
Lisa

Ok, so i just re-downloaded it and its still doing the audio thing.. anyone got the same issues?
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:00 am
OK, I have uploaded the video then downloaded and checked it. All seems good so let me know if any problems.

Paul
Thanks. No bug this time.
Just a feedback — the image in the original video seems to flow more smoothly.
I’m not sure why, if you use the same method to fix the video.
Maybe it’s my brain playing a trick on me. But the first video was easier on the eyes.
Appreciate all you’ve done.
May 22nd, 2008 at 4:14 pm
@su Thanks for the feedback, you’re eyes are spot on.
As Ed mentions in this video, we will have multiple options for download in the future. This video is 80MB which is a lot smaller than the one originally posted which was over 230MB.
I’ll see if we can make both available for those who don’t mind the longer download in order to get better quality.
May 22nd, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Paul
If the TV show is instruction-based, and we have to watch the screen a lot to get details, I would opt for the longer download with better quality.
Once again, thank you for taking the time to explain to us what you do, why you do it, and how you do it.

same here, no audio around 35min into the vid
May 30th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
I only have audio no video just a really cool yellow and green screen :). Did I do something wrong??
June 1st, 2008 at 4:40 pm
Video never came up. Left it up for about 15 minutes. Never appeared.

SORRY, reread your instructions, right clicked and downloaded to my computer. VIDEO WORKS FINE and goes to the very end. Looks great.

I use Firefox browser and when I tried to download the mp4 my Firefox wanted to call it
30DCLaunch.mp4.qt
I deleted the .qt at the end and downloaded it, but there’s no audio, only the visuals. Any suggestions please?

The video from the automatic iTunes feed stopped just about to the point where Ed begins talking about the new invite people and win thing. Tried redownloading in iTunes - same problem so I’m trying the download from the post here.
I’ll let you know if that works for me or not.

I was told about the 30 DC by a person I consider to be sort of a mentor concerning internet business. I am just starting out and can hardly wait to see the results.
Thanks to Mike
