Go to the Writers.

Anne Lamott, in particular, has helped me as both a writer and a photographer. Probably because she’s more neurotic and self-deprecating than I am, and I take comfort in that. In her book Bird by Bird she talks about the first steps in writing, among them this: Write sh*tty first drafts. Don’t over-think it, just get it down. Put the words on paper, no matter how loud the inner critic is screaming that those words are juvenile, self-indulgent, cliche, obvious, crap. Just get it down.

Another awesome article from David DuChemin.

Learning about creativity this past couple of years has been totally crucial for me.

  1. OK just beginning to read about being creative, over the years have had many thoughts occasionally some got down on paper, and now they are in a “safe” place (can’t find them) now ain’t that the way.
Great reading the posts, next step to do something about it.

  2. No writer should care too much about the quality of their first draft. The important thing is to get something down - concentrate on structure, getting over the points you want to convey, and being persuasive. Adding your ‘voice’ or showing how clever you can be with words can wait until the final draft.

    Hi ed,

Creativity and individual expression is what writing is all about. Everybody can write perfectly, just take classes on how to write. But creativity is something that makes the writing very unique.I need to stop over thinking too, gets in my way of getting it done! Helpful post!

Hi Ed,I’ve never write before but I really wish I could… I hope I could learn a thing or two about writing.

  6. Hi Ed,

I wish I could be a good writer like your’s, but god didn’t give me that gift..:)

  7. Hey, NotCathy, Can’t say as I believe you about God. The gift is that we got arms, hands, fingers, pencils, pater, and word processors. Then all we haffff ta do is use em! Good writing?? What’s that? Writing is like snowflakes, no two alike, all flakes are good, all flakes are original. So, of course you have some original thoughts and hopefully you paid a little bit of attention in grade school and learned how to spell reazonabbly well, you can just belly up to the keyboard and write your original thoughts as bold as the rest of us, and that’s what counts!! Good, not so good? How silly. It’s all just judgments we learn in our particular culture.

  8. Nurri - very well said (written). We all see the world from a different perspective and as such we each have something to say. All the remains is to find the audience.

I agree to Nurri and well said. You need to be creative and think outside of the box then you would easily create an original and useful content..
