Yes you can choose any niche you like BUT you need to follow the research. Don't get hung up on an idea or niche you like, even when the numbers won't support it. More of that when TDC actually starts though.

The thing is, if you have a site already about underwater otter wrestling you might follow the research stage and realise there just isn't enough interest in this area. It's a harsh fact but you would be better to stop flogging a dead horse (trying to make money out of a poor niche) and concentrate on something else.
But, if you currently have a women's health site (not a good niche as you are up against some big players), doing your research will help you target areas within this topic that have considerable interest and less competition. You may decide that this is a business you want to continue with.
The research aspect will help you to discover where you may have gone wrong in the past online, and whether you still have a viable business or if it's time to move on.
Keep a very open mind. Nobody likes to hear that they have been wasting their time on something. But better that then continue with it for another few years and have it cost you more money than you make.
