Here's what you should do:
- Backup the newest copy of the database
- Extract a pristine copy of WP 2.6 to your web hosting server.
- Copy the wp-config-sample.php to wp-config.php and edit accordingly to access your current WP database.
- Upload your themes, plugins, images, and other files to wp-content.
Your WP options will remain intact, but you need to reactivate the theme if it was set back to default.
