I think the 30DC people agree about the less value of Social bookmarking. If you were on the challenge last year you would have seen how less its promoted this year.. I think they are using it mostly to get ranking quickly but use blog commenting for real link building..
This is why I think they went with PPC as a more efficient way in time to test a market..
Honestly, I think SEO is at a changing point that's why you can get a $500 product for free on the topic.. Hint, hint...
