I understand where your coming from with this question, as I often wondered this question in the past. But.. The reality is that it all comes down to you. I do understand that seeing examples of people can sometimes be a good motivator, but in reality each person is going to be different.
It comes down to whether your willing to put in the blood and sweat. It's aiming for a predetermined goal and achieving it. In a sense, people choose how long it takes them to get to $x.xx a year. - How hard are you willing to work?
I can't answer this, as I made the mistake of jumping into IM with both feet / full time. My advice to this would be schedule EVERYTHING and work in 1.5 to 2 hour blocks of time.
When I first started I was a mess. I had no schedule/organization skills. One of the hardest parts for me has been procrastination. Going from being told what to do at a job to essentially telling yourself what to do...a lot of people have a problem with this when they first start out.
I break down my projects into junks with deadlines. I go over a monthly calender and break down each task into weekly & daily assignments. I started doing this 3 months ago..most productive 90 days of my life.

Scott,
Thank you, thank you, this is probably one of the most helpful post I've ever read. I find myself in a similar position, as an out of work carpenter who probably will not be able to return and make a living it is for me a matter of survival. Thankfully my beautiful bride is willing for me to take this "college" course in IM (learning marketing through the 30 DC) so I can make a living for us.
Any additional information about scheduling and tricks you are presently using would be greatly appreciated. Are there any particular book(s) you would suggest. Seemingly my great nemesis is not staying focused and not really knowing what to do next. I am experiencing difficulty in understanding how to implement using WP and am presently enrolled with Crowd Mountain. She is quite knowledgeable and very experienced but she seems to have only one speed - fast - and I am having difficulty in understanding all that she teaches.
Imrat - regarding the question of money:
While I'm not qualified to answer your specific question, it would seem wisdom has responded and given you great feed back through the "eyes" of many who are experienced in this field.
A marketer who I study under (PotPieGirl.com) is making in the neighborhood of the numbers you speak of says something profound.
"If I am willing to spend a year doing those things most other people won't, then I can spend the rest of my life doing things most others can't."
I would only offer the advice of one whose status is iconic - Mr. Zig Zigler -
"If one helps enough other people get what they want then he / she can get / have what they want." It seems his emphases was on the word "help".
I wish you great success in finding the answer to your quest.
your old scruffy carpenter friend
