Test test test.

Adsense has been harder to gauge since the introduction of "interest based advertsing"

All a can suggest is test.

Run AdSense solely until you have 500 visitors. What is your CTR like.

Then try Amazon for 500.

Also look at your bounce-rate.

"..I was speaking with a dear, dear friend, who has a HUGE idea, and it was so challenging when they asked for my feedback.."

The five words I dread most from friends who have just had a website created for their offline business..."What do you think Pete?"

We normally have to drink a couple of bottles of wine before I tell them ;-)

Pete :-)

When I get asked this kind of thing I say, "there is no thinking involved, you need to run the numbers. I charge $100 an hour"

Great questions..

I start off by looking at the competition in my niche and seeing what they are offering, also paying close attention to the types of products with adwords campaigns around my keyword phrases.

That helps narrow down the field.

You can also do a quick curiosity test, by asking a question on Yahoo Answers. If your field is crochet, you could ask the question on Yahoo Answers, "What kind of Crochet items do you buy online?"

I wouldn't heavily trust the answers, but it could give you more of a feel for products the crowd are looking for.

And as a final method, check out the forums in your niche, what are people talking about, what are they looking for, what are they buying? Whatever their hot points of interest are, there is your product.

Default Other ways to check monetization options

Barry good points. You can also take a look at the offline retailers for the niche to see what they are promoting (and look for sales). Get their catalogs and go check out the magazines in the niche to see, again, what people are talking about.

It comes down to what Ed says... become a super-authority in your niche.

And again all of this should be done in that first month so you know if your niche and site are worth putting the hundreds of hours you will eventually invest into it.

Don't forget it's not just about "getting traffic"... It's about getting traffic with a "buying intention."
Bitcom, some great advice on seeking traffic with the genuine intention to buy.

This takes it one more step up from targeted traffic.

I think you really have to think on your feet, be flexible and creative to come up with methods and strategies to attract traffic primed and ready for purchasing.

This is where you have to keep your eye on the ball and virtually know your niche market inside out in order to 'know' what your market values and is prepared to get their credit card out for!
