Default Get a Desc into your category pages

A category page of mine that I'm ranking for didn't have full onpage optimization.

A moderator of these forums, one mighty helpful micronet showed me the very easy solution:

"go to your WP admin dashboard, then go to Categories (under the post module) there is a text box for the category description. You can also click the "Edit" link on an existing category to get to the description text box"

I did just that, & here is the result:

Very nice, eh?

PS Ron (micronet) added: "Not all themes show a category description.....This is right from the WP cat description text box --"The description is not prominent by default, however some themes may show it." " (the quotes from Ron are in the 30dc Friendfeed group)

I just did this for my website. How long will it take before it shows up in Market Samurai?

As long as it takes for google to reindex your site. Could be anywhere up to a couple of weeks but try in a few days.

Great Tip! But does this mean that we will benefit from adding these even if we use themes that do not show the descriptions by default? Mine only shows the description when hovering over the category.
Curious.....

Yes Shane - you will still benefit because the search engines know that the keyword is in the DESC field.

I thought wp direct had the seo plugin and so you would have a place for a category description there?

The All-In-One SEO plugin gives you sections to complete for your site as a whole and for the individual pages, but not for categories.

However, since I started this thread I've been told that one's category pages are not going to get ranked particularly well anyway - apparently we should be aiming to rank highly for one particular post when it comes to our categories.

Thank you for this tip! I had just noticed my site stats had "N" for Description, and since I've followed 30DC to the letter, I was wondering what I may have missed.
