FYI,
Here's Googles official submission page for adding your site to the Google spiders: Add your URL to Google This has not been mentioned by Ed' but i suppose it wouldn't hurt to do. Good luck to everyone in the challenge, Ian Parks (Team UK 2008)

The best way to get Google find your blog is by letting the spiders find your pages. Submission takes months to work, but if you build backlinks, you may get into the index in a few hours to a few days.

I've been told by some that submitting your site to the Google submission service is a bad idea.
