Smile Calling all Linux users!

Are you using Linux for the 30 Day Challenge?

I'm having a couple of problems:

1. My people side-bar will only display YouTube and no other options appear
2. Twhirl doesn't seem to operate in Linux.

If you can help with either of these problems I'd be grateful.

Also, any other Linux users please add your tips.

Many thanks.

I can't help you with the side-bar issue -- I found Flock to be painfully slow and somewhat buggy, so elected to use Firefox. As for Twhirl, you can follow the instructions here to get it working.

Thumbs up twhirl on linux

Thanks Splicer, that's great !

I've also found the answer to my People sidebar problem, by doing what I should have done in the 1st place & looking through other people's posts !

The answer is to click on the key symbol in the same toolbar as the People icon, & there you get options to add stuff to the People sidebar (amongst other things).

I'm not having problems with using Flock in Linux, but I did go through Ed's tips about speeding up Flock. If you want to know where to find his tips let me know & I'll hunt for it.

Any other Linux users please get in touch, I'm sure we can all give each other support. I'm currently using Suse but will be upgrading soon.

I usually go by the name ishabluebell or isha_bluebell in various services, as it's easier for people to remember than my full name, Marysia Kurowski.

Linux rocks!

Default Twhirl installation problems

When I follow the directions at the link that Splicer gave (above), after inputting the sudo command line I get the following message from my terminal:

(./adobeair_linux_a1_033108.bin:5304): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

and then nothing happens :-(. I'm using Suse. Any thoughts/suggestions/tips would be much appreciated.

Ok, have now got it to work, & this is what I did:

I managed to get Twhirl installed without problems on my pc (which uses mandrake at present) but my laptop (using Suse) in terminal gave me the error message referred to above.

So I looked at the command line for twhirl on my pc by right-clicking the desktop icon, and the command is:
/opt/twhirl/twhirl

This was the only relevant file that seemed to be missing from my laptop (all the adobe air stuff seemed to be there). Then I copied the opt/twhirl/twhirl file from my pc to the same place on my laptop. And - excuse me while I faint - it all worked .

Thanks Splicer for the link.

Hi Gambit

I had trouble with Samurai installing also so this is what I did:

On my first attempt I shut down all open programs and tried to install Samurai only (as I had Air already installed for Twhirl). I got a message saying that Air was 'broken', - strange since Twhirl worked just fine.

So I just decided to try the install with Twhirl up and running and logged on to Twitter. For some reason the installer liked this and Samurai installed just fine.

Unfortunately Samurai ran painfully slowly (yesterday) and was of no practical value. I have not tried it today, so we'll see.

I'm new to Linux and am running Ubuntu Hardy Heron.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, Adobe AIR does not currently support Linux fully.

Adobe AIR for Linux is currently in alpha release, and has some significant bugs.
