The WPD themes have been completely 'cleaned up' and are also optimized.

If you use a free theme - you would need to do that for yourself. Which is doable - as long as you know what you're doing and get the education necessary so you do.

I got sick of using free themes that I couldn't change or layouts that I loved but had the wrong theme... so I coughed up the $ and purchased Thesis and now I can make my own themes.

It's definitely worth a look but there is a little bit of a learning curve if you don't know CSS or don't have the patience to mess around with code until it does what you want.

Upside is, you can "easily" make some really awesome looking sites.

first of all check the design of your website. if it is quite appealing and attractive than their would be some sort of conversions. also use social networks like Facebook and twitter to drive much traffic to your website.
