I have used Camtasia for several years and love it but I hate to recommend it to someone new to the video making process and to internet marketing in general.

Camstudio works pretty well and has a great price. (free)

Jing is also decent.

Heck though... seesmic works pretty great as well and you don't have to worry about uploading anything or hosting your videos. I would start with seesmic since that will have web 2.0 advantages. That way you can connect on the 30dc blog, with other seesmic users like Ed Dale and that way you can spend a LOT less time on video making and a lot more time on building a community!

Default Summary & comments

I was about to disagree with Mindy...and I'll tell you why ...

When I first started hanging out on Internet Marketing Forums, about 2002-2003, there was an Aussie who recommended I buy 2 things:
1/ Camtasia
2/ Photoshop

He was totally correct. They were great options...at the time.
He even made me (free!) a cool video on how to create webpage
backgrounds that have the word slanted up at an angle, repeated
throughout. I was blown away.

But there are soooo many great options now...many FREE options, that just weren't available then.

Let me do say one thing about Camtasia, though. TechSmith, the makers of Camtasia, actually specialize in usability (Morae). I happened to discover, one day, that they actually supply usability software for the U.S. Government! So there's some very nice "economy of motion" pieces in Camtasia.

Anyway -- I just thought it might help if I summarized what's been said before...though forums seem to lack the ability to put tabular material into posts, sigh.

So, I'm working on creating a small google spreadsheet
(man, are there some cool things in google spreadsheets!)

So, I'll be back!

Okay, I'm back....

Here's a summary of suggestions. I wish I could make a table in posts. I wish I could easily add clickable links to an image...but, I can't. If you want "clickable" -- you can go to the spreadsheet this was taken from -- here...

And you can read about how I did all this on my blog (in my sig.)

BTW, Mindy -- I don't think seesmic does screen capture, does it?

Nevertheless, it has one of the coolest intro videos I think I've seen!

I use Camtasia for doing videos but for capturing images I use Gadwin Printscreen: Screen Capture and Print Screen software

Try SnagIt from Techsmith

Screen Capture | SnagIt | TechSmith's Screen Capture Software

It's a great piece of kit!

Default Linux screen capture

XVidcap - output in divx
Gtk record my desktop - output in ogg.
Last year I start work with ubuntu and I found step by step solutions to some of the challenges.
I found xvidcap to be best solution for youtube.

Techsmith also creates programs for studying usability -- they even sell a version of it to the U.S. Government.

And it shows.

Nice economy of movement!

No, Seesmic doesn't use screen capture. For some reason, my mind went to online videos.

And I did say that I love and use Camtasia. I have owned every update ever since my first purchase of it several years ago. I think I was one of the earlier adopters of Camtasia actually since I bought the first version that came out in June 2000.

BUT... I think one of the reasons people fail online is they spend more money than they need to. I strongly urge folks to spend from profits.

For that reason, I urge folks to go free as much as possible. Now, personally what do I use? Camtasia. And now that I am on a Mac... I will be using Screenflow.

BUT... for folks just getting started and who are in the 30 Day Challenge... I will try to recommend free software when I genuinely believe it will be good enough to get the job done.

Camstudio and Jing certainly will do that.

Now, do I love Camtasia? Yes. In fact, my first frustrations with my MacBook Pro were that Camtasia, Snagit, and Roboform aren't compatible with MAC. That would really handicap me in my work. These programs were the very first ones that I worked to replace.

But for the beginners on the forum... I urge you to put Camtasia on a wish list. So many beginners overspend and get in the habit of thinking a super software will be the ticket to success and overlook ways they could be in pure profit much faster. I doubt many beginners will listen. They will probably be a bit stubborn like I was.... but I hope they will.

I would have made so much more profit if I had just tucked away the credit/debit card and just focused on working and not buying. Especially when the free or open source software is really impressive these days. It may not have all the bells and whistles... but it will get the job done.

VERY wise post, Mindy!

Maybe even beyond wise, and I wholeheartedly agree.

Especially now, when there ARE good free replacements for so many things.

Now you've got me curious though -- in fact, might be a good subject for another thread -- what did you find to replace Camtasia (screenflow, now, I assume , SnagIt! and RoboForm -- oh -- I'll go start another thread.
