Default Does anyone know what ed uses to record his vids??

Hey guys, I'm thinking it's probably some app which is internal with Macs and built into the software package, but if not and it's an external app, does anyone know the name of the program ed uses to create his video tutorials?? - thanks guys

Default Its Mac Only!

He uses a program called screenflow, its mac only and there is literally nothing like it on PC that I am aware of, or maybe there is some high end stuff.

Go buy a mac, honestly the investment will be worth it.

You can pick up an iMac in the UK on ebay for around £350, if you can live with less power you can pick up older dual processing macs for around £250-300, with postage, etc.

I moved this last week, as I wanted screenflow, plugged in my camera and mics, etc and away it goes really really easy. PCs just do not compare on AV

Screenflow - and sorry PC people - it is literally impossible for a PC program to do what screenflow does - and you aint seen half of it yet....

I just remembered the previous occupiers left an old, old mac in my house.

I'm going to dig it out and see if it works.

If not, I'm gonna try and fix it.

I'll be back to ask more questions.

Edit: Just wondering, what minimum spec machine would you recommend to use this type of software reasonably well?

Cheeky Ed, well, I have a PC (though I hate it) and the PC equivalent is Camtasia (the program all the other internet marketers use). It captures the screen just like screenflow does. Whenever you see a screencapture video that isn't Ed's, they probably used camtasia on the PC.

It's expensive at $299

And, it isn't as good as screenflow, (boy, some of those screenflow features are sweet and unbeatable).

But if you are like me and can't afford a mac, it does the job.

Camtasia Studio Screen Recorder for Demos, Presentations and Training

Hope that helps,

Daiyaan

I am running it a dual 867 G4, 2GB Ram, 250GB, 128MB Video, 17" display and it runs great. However certain features arent supported even on that (callouts), although it is possible to "fake" them in screenflow.

Camtasia does a good job for screen capture, however it cant do many of the more powerful things like putting in video of you, adding soundtracks, adding other media. And all the fancy things like panning, zooming, pushing the video into a small box, etc, etc. Screenflow does some amazing things like you can even add transparent pngs to create spotlight effects!

Here are some examples of cheap macs:

Apple Mac G4 Mirror Door Dual1.25 GHZ PowerPC G4 + FREE on eBay, also, PowerMac, Apple Macintosh, Computing (end time 04-Jun-08 13:13:30 BST)

Arguably I might want more memory but hey.. You will also need a copy of leopard, i bought a copy of ebay for the 5 user license at approx $90, for when I get more Macs!

Apple Powermac G4 1.4GHz Tower 250GB/20GB HDs 832MB RAM on eBay, also, PowerMac, Apple Macintosh, Computing (end time 03-Jun-08 21:43:39 BST)

APPLE POWERMAC G4 MIRROR on eBay, also, PowerMac, Apple Macintosh, Computing (end time 01-Jun-08 20:00:00 BST)

And for 176 quid with a 19" monitor!!

Apple PowerMac G4 Dual 1Ghz 512MB OSX 10.5 + LCD on eBay, also, PowerMac, Apple Macintosh, Computing (end time 30-May-08 20:42:56 BST)

OK so its the bottom rung of the ladder but reasonably affordable.

I know many people will say I haven't got that even Simon, and I understand I really do, my advice would be to work your nuts off in TDC and try to make that $500 you will need to upgrade your 2 Ghz XP laptop to a lower spec Mac. If you have an existing PC consider giving it up for a Mac.

Are you willing to forgo your xbox, ps3, hi spec pc games box?

Just as a note, I have been impressed with Magix Movie Edit 14 Plus. I used camtasia to capture the screen (and other video) and then decomressed the camrec file and used Magix to edit the video together. That did some pretty cool stuff . (I could even do that awesome tilted screen effect that Ed did to advertise StomperNET).

I'm not sure if it has been mentioned or not, but Microsoft OneNote has worked for me. I use the notebook for just about everything, it also takes clippings of the web and desktop. It is also nice because it intergrated with all the other office products and has a 'blog this' feature I have not investigated very much but claime to work with most blogging sites. I'm not sure how well this will work with the 30DC but I thought I'd throw it out there.
