I wanted to know what the mankini thing was about (besides being really hot on that trampoline bloke). The gist I got from the intro video for this years tdc was an Ed Dale product spoof of some sort.
So, I wanted to actually find out more about this Ed Dale character with whom I've been spending so much time. When I typed "Ed Dale" into Wikipedia I get 2,309 results, yet the one in question doesn't appear to be in the top 20. Now, my confusion is this. Does it matter? Seems to be ironically antithetical to our prophet's message. Or, am I just ignorant enough to get myself in trouble by compounding on my own confusion? |

The Ed Dale Mankini thing to the best of my recollection from reading etc, was a joke that came to a head at a Beechwood Australia marketing conference. There was a bet, and Dan Raine (man behind 30DC) lost and had to wear a pink Mankini. There is a video of that on youtube. Since then the Joke Ed Dale Mankini has been going around from an SEO standpoint to rank the term Mankini with the name Ed Dale. The videos you have seen are all part of that SEO Joke to rank those terms, as well as poking fun at the Master Himself. I am sure there are others that know the full story, but that is what I have gathered on the subject from bits and peices here and their and as part of THE Immediate Edge. hope that clears up some stuff.

Well almost but not quite.
There was a challenge that Dan Raine "lost" by a couple of hundred dollars. The penalty was to wear a pink thong. YouTube - Dan Raine Makes Good On 15 K Challenge <---- must watch YouTube vid (lol!) And then there was some talk of Ed in a mankini that spawned into a challenge by some 30DC veterans to "own" the Google search term " Ed Dale Mankini " All in good fun, but also to test out things on a phrase that did not exist on the internet before then.,... Now everyone wants in on teh Mankini action (hence Phill on the trampoline)

Wikipedia is usually in the top of most search terms in my experience. It is considered and authority site, has millions of links pointed to it, and is copied or cloned via other sources. The true Wikipedia is open source and not a place to spam. Editors are all over it and spaming wiki can cause you some problems. Links comming from Wiki are "no-follow" but they still seem to give weight to a website that is mentioned in Wiki. Hope that clears us some things... ps. Catch me on FriendFeed

I think it's worth mentioning the practice of google bombing in relation to this whole mankini thing. I was under the impression that google was penalizing people discovered to be using the practice, but I guess not.

Google bombing or Google bowling is sending TONS of links at a keyword term to out position existing web property from top results. In Hence Bombing or Bowling a keyword term. The experiment of several years ago, had the Search Term , "George Bush or Utter Failure" (something like that) going to links to a government whitehouse site. Google closed that loophole after it was present for a long period of time. Since Ed Dale Mankini term is just a made up thing and their is no real web site property it's not an issue. testing the search engines with Made up terms is a way to see what works and what doesn't as far as SEO manipulation.

As one of the 'Team Evil' cohorts
mu ha ha.... I can confirm the truth behind the Mankini Escapade...and end speculation once and for all (or maybe we'll try to confuse you further....mu ha ha...)(queue sinister music) It started with a seemingly innocent post Barb made on twitter about Mankini's taking the place of thongs. After Beechworth, I was feeling sorry for Dan always seeming to be the brunt of our jokes with the Pink Thong forfeit, and that it's time to share the 'good sport award' and even out the odds - as Ed very bravely donned his underwear on Stage in 2005 in Orlando due to losing the bet about who would win Australian Idol for that year - but that was two years ago - so 'Ed's turn' again - poor Ed! Anyway I contacted Barb with a plan, and some other divine 'Evilettes' and well the rest is history...twittering, digging, youtubing...and well...you saw the Trampoline!...with the aim of inextricably linking Ed's name to the word Mankini to the point he will end up feeling compelled to don one (or it may get named as the next forfeit! ) - I think that's called 'peer pressure' lol. It's all in good fun - as we ADORE Ed and would never do anything to harm him - he performs enough self harm with his Crocs fetish! lol So if you have a 'naughty' side...feel free to play along - as it's also teaching a good lesson at the same time...the power of Web 2.0 in getting rankings for long tail keywords quickly! Caro ![]() PS: This post will self destruct in 30 seconds...
