Just a note to say that your computer freezing up was likely a separate issue to any software downloading or accounts you created last year. You've identified several different issues that you're concerned about, that all require different solutions.

If you're concerned about your passwords being compromised, follow the password advice above. As a web developer, I know that any site has the potential to be hacked or compromised; just make sure that if someone gains access to your Twitter account for any reason, they can't use that password to then gain access to your internet banking, for example.

If you're concerned about viruses when downloading Flock, Twhirl, or any other software that Ed recommends, make sure you have a good anti-virus program installed. The free version of AVG is very good.

If you're experiencing performance issues with your computer, it may or may not be related to a virus. Run a virus scan to check. Performance issues can be caused by many things, viruses being only a small portion of that. Make sure you're maintaining your computer correctly (you wouldn't drive a car without getting the oil changed once in a while, would you?). If you experience problems, take it to a reputable repair shop.

What I have done with my passwords is to copy them into an excel spreadsheet along with login name and email address. I then password protected my excel sheet. Cheap and easy and fairly safe.
