Here is something that gave me some ideas. I work at a shopping mall, and eat lunch at the "food court" which is where shoppers get fast food for lunch.
So its a big room full of people out to buy stuff.

While having my lunch, I read their t-shirts , baseball caps and shopping bags. Everyone of which advertises a niche of one sort or another that interests them or they have just made a purchase in.

No thinking required, just paper and pencil.

Mykl - maybe you could look at your present niche/s with a different purpose than selling a product.

For eg. the only niches i've identified for my 30DC feature the word "free" - I have an existing business and have found nothing else that's not totally oversubscribed.

So ... I'll take the "free niches" ... and will give info away - but then doing all I can to get visitors e-mail address - then I can follow up with my offers via e-mail.

Hey, but what do I know!! That's my plan anyhow. I am in somewhat of a similar field to you - general theme: self improvement - and also find it incredibly tough to find an uncatered for niche.

I think we analyzed this in the Niche Marketing Black Book...

OCI around 50% is not very high... It's pretty mid-range.

Ideally you want to look at keywords that are 75%+

50% means "uncertain" - it's the middle of the range.

Also, I know GuruBob doesn't like OCI as an indicator of commerciality because it's unproven - and he's right, it is unproven.
I believe he prefers to look at a more proven indicator - click-through rates.

We've done a lot of analysis on OCI, and have not found a statistically significant correlation between a high OCI and a high CTR yet...

Don't forget Market Value - it's a huge factor for online success. Check out the black book for details.

@Sarahw13 - Sorry - I just read your brilliant post... Thank-you! There's a lot of great information here for anyone who wants to re-read it.

Arrow As my dad would say...

I got the e-mail saying I had a little black book, I just tossed it in my e-book directory with all the other great pieces of wisdom I find all over the Internet. I probably have a gold mine sitting on this very computer!!

My dad would say RTFB. I don't talk like that though. I'm sure he meant "Read The Forgotten Book." So before I spout off more. I'll go do that.

What a great thread, thanks for sharing everyone, and I love this: "Read The Forgotten Book."

[scurries off to read the blackbook...]

Smile Synergy

Hey guys,
This is what a quality community should be. We put our collective thoughts together and they are greater than us sitting in our little dark rooms in front of our lonely shining monitors by ourselves.

It's the idea behind mastermind.

Thanks again all.

(Susan, my humor's a little wry - sometimes it gets you sometimes it just sits there, glad it tickled you.)

Mykyl there are some great insights in this thread. Even after being involved in internet stuff for many years I got much good new info out of the free black book.

The old perception "you get what you pay for" and "if it's free it can't be any good" can lead you to 'toss' good ebooks into the "I'll look at maybe never folder".

I'd suggest reading through it because Brent and the gang tell you the top 40 money spending markets online. Very good stuff backed up by actual research data. No conjecture.

Thanks for your kind feedback

Yes, we wanted to give people genuine value for completing the survey - because the survey genuinely helps us.

The questions in the survey will help us to improve Market Samurai and create new Noble Samurai products that do the hard work for you in other areas of internet marketing.

As you probably read, the black book is based on years of research and thousands of hours of work by the geeks in the lab (dating back to 2003 I think - but the data we researched was last updated as of July 2008)

Brent

Brent, that's a marketing lesson right there. As a fellow copywriter it's very clear how important and valuable getting good answers from your customers and prospects on what they want more of from you.

A good set of survey data is worth it's weight in gold and can lead to volumes more sales because you give the customers exactly what they told you they wanted.

If you're new and doubting the value of this just look at what Ed and Dan are doing giving away awesome free content that is extremely valuable. It's a proven model you should incorporate in whatever niche you go into.
