Default How To Add a New Domain To Hostgator

Hi,

I already have a hostgator account and i've set my domain's nameservers to hostgator's. How do I add a new domain from the cpanel?

Thanks,
asgarmabuk

We dont use hostgator but most cpanel installations are very similar. So try following these directions and they should be fine for you to get you started

From cpanel choose the option for WHM Web Host Manager. From there choose Account Functions ----->Create an Account.
At this point you fill in the domain name, a user account name and password, email contact address and generally use teh default settings or changing nameservers to what Hostgator has informed you to use for these
Press CREATE at its finished

If you dont have the above options then wait for another Hostgator user to post but in general this is the method used on most cpanel installations.

Default did you get an answer to this?

We are also trying to figure this out.

So far what I've found is not clear. It appears you have to register the domain name separately, then log into your cpanel and add it into the addon domains section. I'm hoping this is correct since my husband will be trying it tomorrow.

If you have done this, or found another way to do this, please post. It's been a little frustrating not finding clear directions for this.

Thanks!

That how you do it
obviously register the domain point it at your server space, then in your cpanel go to addon domain and create a domain then you will have a folder in your public_html the same name as your new domain and thats where you put your website files.

hope that helps.

Newer version of cPanel allows you to create a new domain outside of the public_html folder, i.e. in the same level as public_html, which can be neat when moving files around.

Just login to your account and follow the wizard in the Add-on Domain section.

I had a prob with this initially but I got it sussed in the end - below is the dummies guide - which I wrote for myself

First up, get yourself a domain name, I did this with namecheap. You need to get the nameservers of your new domain at namecheap (or wherever you purchased your new domain) to point to your original hostgator a/c. You do this by logging into namecheap, clicking on your new domain and then, on the left hand side in the menu nav, it says 'Transfer DNS to Webhost'. Click on that!

It will then bring up a table 1 - 5 and you need to fill in the top 2 with the nameservers sent to you by hostgator when you first opened your a/c. It would have arrived in the welcome email with your a/c details. It will look something like:-
ns867.hostgator.com
ns868.hostgator.com

add these details to the top two spaces and click on save details.

Then pop over to hostgator and log in to your cpanel of the first domain you have ie. myfirstdomain.com/cpanel.

Scroll down to where it says 'add on domains' (in the domains section) and then fill in the details of your new domain. If you are unsure, there is a handy video tutorial at the top of the add on domain page that explains what you need to put (it's very straightforward).

If you are then wanting to use this over at WPD, you pop over to WPD and click on install new sites/themes, choose the one you want and click install site immediately.

Under where it says 'hosting account information' click on 'select saved account' and it should bring up the details you entered the first time you used WPD. Then under the heading Account Location click on browse account location to bring up all of the files. Click on THE WORDS public_html to open it and you will now see more folders appear. Find your new domain name that you just added over at hostgator and then click on THE WORDS Select This. this should bring up public_html/yournewdomainname.

....and that's it! Finish everything else off as normal and it's job done!

Don't forget that after you've purchased a domain name it takes a little while to propagate so take this into account if things aren't showing up. If put your new url/domain into your address bar and it brings up a page with some folders on it - then that's a sign that you're good to go with the stage I've outlined above!

Hope that all makes sense!

....apologies for going off on one a bit there, I've re-read your question and you had the 1st bit sussed already, hopefully you'll find the second half useful and others may benefit from the first half!
