Day 8 - Social Bookmarking

Hi Everyone!

I first must say that I am enjoying this years challenge very much! Thank you to all: Ed, Dan, and Gang!

I did the challenge last year and got stuck on Social Bookmarking. Here are some questions that I would like to have some thoughts and opinions on as I am sure others are wondering the same thing:


1. Ed discussed in Day 8, only bookmarking to Propellor, Digg, Delicious, Twitter, and StumbleUpon. Is this all that we should be doing? In market Samurai, some sites have more than 5 backlinks. However, going through SocialMarker and doing 50+ backlinks for every article that we write would be very time consuming.... Your thoughts?

2. If I created 3 blogs in WordPressDirect, one on Vintage Guitars, Fly Fishing, and one on Internet Marketing. Would I use the same User Name to Socially Bookmark, or would I want to have different user names for each niche that I have?

3. I noticed on the Dashboard "Two People" in green (icon) just below the "Refer Friends". I had noticed that this page is designed to Socially Bookmark to 30 sites. However it looks like it is still in the development phase, and has been that way for some time. Will this tool be released for the Challenge?

I thank those of you that are able to see the dilemmas in what I am asking and I hope that for the rest of us newcomers that we all gain from this post.

Can I recommend some caution when using StumbleUpon in this way...

You're going to add more and more posts to your blogs. Let's say you do 30 in 10 days, that will be 150 backlinks!

You should read the Terms of Use of each service. I know for sure that StumbleUpon and Digg don't allow that, so chose wisely.

You will be blocked on all that social bookmark pages before you even reach the 5th day.

Think about it from a non marketers point of view. If you were using delicious (as many of us do) just to bookmark your favourite sites, you would be bookmarking on all sorts of topics. I bookmark sites on internet marketing, dancing, blogging, recipes, news stories, entertainment/gossip, you tube videos - whatever interests me enough to want to maybe want to look at it again sometime.

So, the answer is - one account will be fine for all.

Please note: You need to use all these sites organically. Not just for your own sites but use them regularly for all webpages that interest you or you find useful. And take the time to read their T&Cs so you don't abuse the system.

I think I've bitten off more than I can chew for the moment. So I'm happy to have today (Sunday) off from any new lessons. I'm running with 2 different niches at the same time trying to use the 30DC info to promote my other websites. These sites have been around for a while and haven't done much.

Anyhow, I'm using socialmarker.com and socialposter.com. I have accounts at each and every site. I have a password manager (1Password is GREAT! mac only). And I have lots of free time at the moment.

But I've put in about 6 hours a day in the past few days just social bookmarking! Even with tools like socialmarker, it seems to take an age. Yes, I'm doing 3 times the work needed, because I'm promoting 3 sites, but still....I'm going cross-eyed!

I hope a future lesson shows us how to leverage cheap labour in 3rd world countries to our advantage. (I read that in the 4-hour Work Week). But for now...nose to the grindstone, and all that jazz...
