Feeling shy with keyword selection. I'd appreciated any help.
This keyword looked good until I checked out the SEO competition tool on Market Samurai. The top three sites are form about.com. Pass on this keyword? Keyword: broad 22,200 (Approx Search Volume: July) 18,100 (Approx Avg Search Volume) phrase 5,400 (Approx Search Volume: July) 5,400 (Approx Avg Search Volume) 27,600 competing pages on phrase keyword Here's a pic of the MS comp analysis (This is the best I can do for posting a pic) http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3088/...ee0c52.jpg?v=0

I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts.
What do you think about the traffic for that keyword? What do you think about the BLD column (Domain Backlinks)? What do you think about the Page Rank spread? (PR column) What do you think about the BLP spread? (Page Backlinks) What about the on-page factors (columns to the right)? Given what you think of the above factors, which sites do you think you can easily out-rank? (Which position do you think you can get?) Do you think that, given the effort that you'll go to to get a ranking, it's worth having a try and experimenting with this keyword? (Which is what people should be doing in the first half of the challenge - experimenting) Brent |

Thanks for responding Brent. I've looked at what you suggest above previous to posting - perhaps I was not clear. Traffic looks good to me as well as the numbers of competing websites. However the BLD column, Page Rank spread,BLP spread and on-page factors are conflicting and confusing to my untrained eye. The domain ages are high, the PR so-so, BLP are somewhat low for the higher ranked sites and really high for the lower ones. It's confusing at this point. None of the sites have the keyword in the domain name . . . The topmost site is to about.com. That's why I was asking for help. Do I think I can outrank about.com - No. I don't think it would be easy to get ranked but not sure. I've already spent time 'experimenting' on a keyword that is not working out and really want to make my dollar during the challenge.

After this, the rest is just math...
If you can't get #1 spot, what spot can you get? What's the traffic like? (You might want to use phrase or exact match traffic, to be conservative in your numbers) Based on the data at: Click Rate for Top 10 Search Results - Jim Boykin’s SEO Blog ... How many visitors do you think you could potentially get per day for your keyword, based on where you think you can get rankings? How long would it take you to get 200 visitors, based on this? Are you prepared to wait that long to see if this keyword works for you? If so, go for it! If not, it's time to find another. |
