Default Negative keyword? Minus free?

In todays training on adwords, the lovely Caro entered "-free" as a keyword.

My daily dumb question is ; What does that do and why is it a good thing?

Thanks!

That would be a negative keyword. Negative keywords mean that when someone searches for that word, you're ad will not show up.

So for example if someone searches for Free Fitness Videos and you're trying to sell fitness videos, you obviously don't want your ad to show up for that search, since they are not a likely buyer and the money you spent on their click to your site will have been wasted.

Alex, I like your avatar

The purpose is to avoid people who are looking for free information with little or no intention to buy. So when they enter free as part of the keyword, the ads won't be displayed.

In your niche, you may have other negative keywords as well, but free seems to be an option that works across many different campaigns and ad groups.
