Default Linux and the TDC?

Hello All,

i'm new to this whole thing, and i think it's a great idea! currently i'm running ubuntu 8.04, and adobe air is only in alpha testing. i've signed up as a tester, but samuri is having trouble running (in that..it doesnt...can't detect the adobe air on my system).

I do have windows avaliable (wife's laptop) but i'd prefer to keep it on my ubuntu system if possible!

Any help would be apprecated...

Mark

I made it through the 30DC with Linux without any real problems. The AIR thing was the worst part and took less than about 10 minutes to get fully set up and operational (once I found a posting in the AIR forum on manual setup). AIR comes pre-compiled (*not* open source), so there's nothing to build (which is probably why it works so poorly on *NIX).

If I could find the forum posting, I'd just link that instead, but I don't. So here it goes:

1. Download and extract AIR tarball from Adobe.
2. Download and unzip Market Samurai (or Twhirl, or whatever) AIR file.
3. Run 'adl' binary from #1 above: "adl -nodebug <path-to-MS-files>/META-INF/AIR/application.xml <path-to-MS-files>/MarketSamurai". I made a simple bash script to I can just run "ms" to have it launch. An 'alias' would work as well.

That's it. It's really easy. You'll need to download and extract AIR file updates manually, but since you can just extract over the old files, it takes a few seconds at most.

A friend and I both completed the whole challenge without problems with our Fedora 9 machines. After you get past the AIR stuff, you just need an email client and a browser (and you've obviously got that part under control or you wouldn't have made it this far!).

Good luck - feel free to post back and let me know if you need more help.

- Brock

Also, Mark, did you know that there's a friendfeed room for 30 day challenge Linux-users? Send me a private message if you'd like the url for the room.

Hey Brock,
Running into a bit of a snag...there is no tarball, it's just a bin file, and when i try to open it, it gives me the error "there is no application installed for this file type."
Am i missing something?
Thanks again!

Thanks guys!

I've placed this solution into the Noble Samurai Knowledge Base so that future Market Samurai users on Ubuntu can find this too:

Ubuntu: Installing Adobe AIR / Market Samurai - Powered By Kayako SupportSuite

That'll teach me to write from memory. I actually found the original post: Adobe - Adobe AIR for Linux

You have to download the AIR SDK, not the binary file to do it the way I described. I originally tried the "official" option of installing the binary and then using it to launch AIR files directly but had all kinds of problems, not the least of which was updating.

I posted this mostly for the sake of others in trouble who end up here looking for answers: I'm glad to hear it's working for you, Mark!
